The Last Word. New App Store Timelines Give Event Planners Options

Over the past few months, Apple has changed the App Store guidelines to restrict branded event apps. Our first update on this topic highlighted key aspects of the policy changes. It was still very early in the process, and there was some uncertainty, but we acted quickly and introduced the new Attendify container app. Our follow-up post focused on next steps for event organizers and explained how Apple’s new rules might impact the industry. Since our last update, we’ve been in constant communication with Apple and have new information to share:

Branded apps
In order to help us navigate this transition, Apple confirmed that we can continue submitting branded event apps via Attendify’s App Store developer account until Sunday, December 24, 2017.

In order to ensure all apps are approved by the end of the year, we will need to have all branded apps submitted by Monday, December 18, 2017, at 5:00 pm Pacific Time.

Additionally, all branded apps submitted and approved by the deadline will be grandfathered in for changes and updates. This means you can continue to make changes to app icons and splash screens, in addition to receiving updates such as new feature releases and bug fixes. This is big news that is sure to impact event organizers’ decisions.

What happens after the deadline?
Publishing event apps to the Attendify branded container app will be the most reliable and speedy way to create a mobile experience for events. Many of our clients, particularly those with events in early 2018, have already started the transition to the Attendify App. This alternative way of publishing event apps provides fantastic opportunities for branding though detailed, rich event profiles.

I still need a branded app. Can Attendify help?
Absolutely. There are still options that can be explored for branded apps after the December 2017 deadline. If you have your own App Store developer account, you can publish a multi-event app. If you have an Apple Enterprise Developer account you can setup private distribution, which is perfect for corporate and association events. Please contact our team to learn about these options.

We want to make this transition as seamless as possible for you, so here’s what we recommend:

  1. If a branded app is important for your event(s), start working on them right away.
  2. Attendify’s support and success teams are ready to help get your apps published.
  3. If a branded app isn’t essential, please feel free to publish to the Attendify container app.
  4. If you want to create branded apps in 2018 and beyond, talk to our team to learn what your options are.
